Why I started keto
A few years back I was working as a restaurant manager, working long hours, late nights and a quite stressful working environment and I ended up with some pretty bad gut issues.
When I left the industry and got a new job that was a lot less stressful then my last job and my symptoms were still there I started to get worried that it might be something wrong with me. I thought I had bowl cancer, that’s how bad my symptoms actually were. I would wake up at night with very painful cramps. Feeling like someone was twisting my intestines. For a long time, I was bleeding excessively from my intestines as well. Having to go to the toilet up to 6 times a day sometimes.
I never thought that it might be the food I’m eating that causes these symptoms. I did so many tests and even a colonoscopy but the doctors didn’t find anything wrong with me and they didn’t think to mention it might be my diet.
They tested me for celiac and lactose intolerance and both came back negative. At that stage I was still eating what is considered a “healthy diet’ I didn’t eat any junk food or take away and I rarely drank alcohol. And I’ve never been a sweet tooth.
When I met my partner over two years ago he suggested that it might be what I eat that causes these issues and suggested that we should start a Paleo diet. A week later we started the Paleo diet and I did a lot of research about gut health, autoimmune disease and a paleo diet. After a couple of weeks on a paleo diet my symptoms were gone! We followed the Paleo life style for a year and I loved it but I still felt tired and had hormonal imbalance every now and then.
My partner then suggested that we try a ketogenic diet instead as he heard and read lots about it and how it’s supposed to balance out your hormones as well as keep your insulin levels streamlined which results in more levelled energy levels. I was a bit hesitant at first but then I thought what do we have to loose trying.
The first week was a nightmare as I still then didn’t realize how much sugar fruit, honey and dates actually have in it. I had major “sugar’” withdrawals and ended up with keto flu.
I felt like crap for a couple of weeks but then it was like a switch turned on and all of the sudden I felt better than ever.
I went to crossfit that day and even my crossfit coach mentioned how he could see my energy levels being a lot more streamlined throughout the workout.
After that I have never looked back. I believe that a keto diet is not a diet but a lifestyle. Another thing that happened with keto was improvements in my sleep, I have always thought I was born a restless sleeper and that that was something I just had to live with for the rest of my life but keto have cured my restless sleep as well and it now takes me 1/10 of the time it used to, to fall asleep at night.
So basically, I’m now in my mid-thirties and I’m feeling better than I ever have in my life. I just hope the rest of the world catch up with keto to get to feel as good as I do. I have a lot of energy, I sleep well, my mood swings have improved tremendously and my gut health is great.
