Why Did I Start Dirty Clean Eats? (Matt)

Matt from Dirty Clean Eats with retired Thai Drag Queen

First official post and I have already messed with the rhyme scheme. I hear you asking ‘Matt, why doesn’t the title of this article match the menu?’…because it’s my website and I’ll do what I want, that’s why. If you don’t like it go buy some merchandise and come back again tomorrow. That’ll show me.

Why?

I have to admit as I sit down to write my first article I am a little nervous. My grammar is terrible, my spelling is completely fucked and I’ve had one too many hits to the ol’ noggin over the years to string many coherent sentences together.

With that said, equipped with a 12th grade education and a positive attitude here we go.

Let’s start at the beginning…Why did I/we create this website?

I’m an average guy rapidly approaching his 30’s who has been fumbling his way through the traps and pitfalls of the health and fitness industry for over 15 years. All the way from a 13 year old benching 40 kg with the spotter taking ½ the weight right up to today where I’m bombarded by ‘new and improved’ ideas that feel overwhelming.

Everyone is trying to sell you something and it taints everything they do and say (hey and I’ll probably try and sell you a cool t-shirt or something eventually too but I haven’t quite figured that part out yet). I want this website to be a safe harbour of ideas. I can’t promise I’ll know everything but I can tell you it will be my genuine opinion and it will be honest…

Surprise, surprise, already got off topic. If you continue to follow this website you’ll find I do that quite often and James isn’t any better. I promised to start at the beginning.

This whole thing stemmed from a camping trip James and I went on a few months ago (depends when you are reading this to the accuracy of this statement). I have a great life; a beautiful wife, loving family, good job etc… but waking up each day and working for the man I can’t shake the feeling this isn’t how it is supposed to be. Listened to one too many Joe Rogan Experience podcasts probably.

So, after 10 beers, James floated his idea. He was staring a clean eating food delivery business. I was intrigued. However, the more I listened the more it sounded like a lot of fucking around with things I wasn’t that interested in. Cooking the same bulk meals in a comercial kitchen i didn’t have over and over again sounded like it would get real old, real quick.

On the positive side, I did have a catchy name which I can only assume is ¾’s of any successful business. Stuck in the middle of nowhere, no phone reception and a full bottle of Vodka…It was time to brainstorm. I thought to myself:

‘what do I like about this idea?’

‘what don’t I?’

‘what are my strengths?’

…and it hit me ‘I should talk shit on the internet’.

Half drunk on a Saturday night that sounded like a fantastic idea but in the cold light of day it didn’t feel very fulfilling. Don’t be fooled, DirtyCleanEats.com will be filled with nonsense but I want to at least pretend we have a purpose. Then I remembered what it was like (and still is) trying to navigate all the lies and marketing when it comes to the health and fitness industry. There is so much conflicting information and outright bullshit who knows what the truth is.

What I want this website to provide:
  • A catalogue of tried and tested clean eating recipes.
  • Details on strength training, fitness and nutrition plans I’ve followed.
  • Random commentary on things I have tried and my opinion to help you decide if you want to try them to.
  • ‘How to’ guides on the very few things I’ve figured out well enough to share.
Final Thoughts

Eventually I’d love this website to start generating some income but that isn’t really my goal right now. First and foremost, I want to build something of value even if that ends up only being an online recipe book for me and James.

Worst case scenario I got someone to draw me a cool logo where I look like Archer.
