WHAT DO WE SAY?
While training at Bali MMA (shout out to Bali MMA) good friend of DCE and professional MMA fighter Luke Howard introduced us to JAMU; an Indonesian drink said to aid recovery and help with inflammation.
This was directly after Luke beat us up for the 2 hours so being the vain individuals we are, naturally we assumed the JAMU was giving him superpowers. We proceeded to drink the JAMU everyday and maybe it was the magic of being on holiday but most of my niggling injuries (especially my lower back pain) cleared up for the rest of the camp.
Arriving back in Australia we couldn’t find this magical drink anywhere and after converting back to AUS dollars I’m not sure we could afford paying $10+ dollars for individual serves anyway. Solution: after 6 months of trial an error and much investigation we have Dirty Doctors Magical Elixir.
WHAT IS IN IT?
Turmeric, Ginger, Garlic, Cinnamon, Chilli, Black Pepper, Apple Cider Vinegar, Lime
There are a number of ways to drink JAMU including mixing with cold water, mixing with soda water, brewing into a hot tea or taking a shot. Simply mix a serve (10 ml) with your desired drink and enjoy.

WHAT DOES THE INTERNET SAY?
JAMU is a traditional Indonesian drink, predominantly made from natural ingredients including roots, bark, flowers, seeds, leaves and fruits. It dates back thousands of years and has some similarities to Ayurveda. In Indonesia JAMU is used to address a wide range of ailments, depending on the ingredients used.
Widely available from cafes and restaurants across Bali, turmeric JAMU seems to be the most commonplace. A Balinese cook told me that women traditionally drink it two or three times a week for beauty, and men drink it mixed with raw egg yolk for strength.
One of the most powerful healing herbs, turmeric is a rhizome or root (similar in form to ginger) that can be used fresh, or in dried powder form. Besides being a powerful anti-inflammatory, natural liver detoxifier and kidney cleanser, it’s also thought to have a host of health benefits including antioxidant, digestive, antiplatelet (decreases clotting), cholesterol lowering and anti-carcinogenic properties.
Turmeric’s potential benefits come from curcumin, the active ingredient now being studied around the world for its potential health benefits.
